Google Launches Startups Accelerator Program for Black Founders in South Africa

Google has opened applications for its latest initiative, the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa: Black Founders program, aimed at empowering Black-owned startups in South Africa. This hybrid program offers a rare opportunity for startups to gain access to significant funding, resources, and mentorship.

Eligibility for the Google for Startups Accelerator Program

To qualify for the Google Startups Accelerator Africa: Black Founders program, startups must meet the following criteria:

  • Headquartered in South Africa and building solutions for the African or global market
  • At least one Black South African founder
  • A strong, driven team with a live product that uses or has the potential to use AI
  • Compatibility with Google products and the ability to leverage them for growth

The selected startups will benefit from an equity-free cash award of up to $50,000 (around R1 million) and receive $200,000 in cloud credits (approximately R3.6 million). In addition, participants will have access to one-on-one training and networking opportunities with industry mentors, who will provide tailored guidance to address the specific challenges of each startup.

Key Dates and Timeline

The program will run from late 2024 until March 2025, with applications closing on 14 October 2024. A total of 15 South African startups will be selected to participate in this transformative initiative.

Google’s Vision for African Startups

Google sees startups in Africa as key drivers of innovation, economic growth, and social progress. By supporting Black-owned startups, Google aims to foster systemic change and encourage job creation and wealth generation.

Folarin Aiyegbusi, Head of Startup Ecosystem at Google Sub-Saharan Africa, emphasized Google’s commitment: “By investing in South African Black-owned startups, we are driving systemic change and promoting job creation and wealth generation for the future.”

The program’s locally-based implementation partner will assist with the distribution of funds, ensuring startups receive the necessary financial backing to scale their solutions and create meaningful impact.

Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Solly Malatsi, praised the initiative, stating, “I’m excited by Google’s investment and technical support to stimulate the SA tech ecosystem and would like to encourage eligible startups to apply so they can use this opportunity to grow their businesses and help create employment.”
